This compilation, put together by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley, perfectly captures the vibe: Jungle Brothers ("Doin' Our Own Dang") and A Tribe Called Quest ("Bonita Applebum") to KMD ("Peachfuzz"), Queen Latifah ("Mama Gave Birth To The Soul Children"), and Black Sheep ("The Choice Is Yours" (Revisited)). The West Coast is also present, check out Del Tha Funky Homosapien's "Mistadobalina" and Digital Underground's "Doowutchyalike."
