Mount Kimbie: Cold Spring Fault Less Youth 2LP
Sophomore full length from Mount Kimbie on Warp! First Daft, then BOC, and now this - I think it's safe to say 2013 has been a big year in music (and we're only halfway through). Cold Spring Fault Less follows Mount Kimbie's critically-acclaimed debut (2010's Crooks & Lovers on Hot Flush) and finds the UK duo expanding and incorporaing many more live elements to their sound. Apparently Dominic Maker and Kai Campos (aka Mount Kimbie) had such a great time performing pieces from their last album on tour, that when creating this one, they wanted to record tracks that would translate better on stage. The result is something much more ambitious, developed, and less "beat-centric" than anything off Crooks & Lovers. You'll also notice the use of vocals (their own!), as well as those of unexpected collaborator King Krule on many of the tracks. Despite the change in course, their boldness and risk-taking with the production allows Mount Kimbie to safely steer clear of the dreaded sophomore slump and create something as awesome and refreshing as their debut - no easy feat by anymeans! Standouts include "Home Recording," "Made To Stay," "Lie Near," "Meter Pale Tone," and "Fall Out." 11 tracks over two LPs with gatefold sleeve. Worthy of repeat listening, recommended.
