There are moments in time where extreme turmoil can drive artistic creativity. In Italy, the years known as the Anni di Piombo (Years Of Lead) were filled unprecedented political turmoil between the late 60s and early 80s. They were filled with political violence in the form of bombings, assassinations and street warfare between rival militant factions. Mutazione is a collection of reactionary underground electronic and new wave rarities from Italy. The compilation, curated by Walls' Alessio Natalizia, focuses on the hotbed of activism in Tuscany and the Emilio Romagna region where bands emerged from squats, and right and left wing political groups. The sound touches on punk, new wave and experimental industrial sounds of the time, but captures the angst and paranoia rampant in Italy. It's a dark and brooding affair, heavy on electronics and synths, that stands in stark contrast to the Italo sounds most of us are familiar with. Includes extensive sleeve notes by two of Italy's leading cultural journalists, Andrea Pomini and Alberto Campo, both now of Rumore magazine. The package also features a wealth of original photos alongside artwork from fanzines, cassettes and LP covers. Double LP pressing housed in gatefold sleeve, packaged with full double CD version.
