The world is ending, so letās party away. ā1999 was pretty different for a message. Not your average bubblegum hit,ā says Matt Fink, the keyboardist for Prince (RIP)ās band, the Revolution. With his 5th studio album, Prince won over the mainstream without conceding his fabulous philosophy on dance, music, sex, romance, one night stands, and other facets of life. āLittle Red Corvette,ā āDelirious,ā and ā1999ā are the big hits, and songs like āLady Cab Driver,ā with its use of street sounds, and āSomething in the Water,ā which is built on the Linn drum machine, are very experimental (as was the overt use of synths throughout the album) in the pop context of 1982, the year of the albumās release. 1999 would go on to influence r&b, pop, and dance sounds for many years to come, and it effectively set the stage for Princeās magnum opus, Purple Rain.
