The Drums: Encyclopedia (180g, Free MP3) Vinyl 2LP

The Drums: Encyclopedia (180g, Free MP3) Vinyl 2LP

Finding happiness in dark places. They made us wait three years for their third album but The Drums have returned with a decidedly gloomy affair: Encyclopedia. The album gets off to quick start with the break neck track “Magic Mountain” showing off their newfound no-wave angle. The rest of the songs venture along a similarly darker-than-normal path while also adding some solid synth wait along the way. “I Hope Time Doesn’t Change Him” is a beautifully sparse number that verges into XX-esque territory. “Let Me” straddles a few different avenues with its ballad vocals, chugging synth bass and speed happy rhythms. They slow things down towards the end with “U.S. National Park” as it prances along a glockenspiel like a perpetual Sunday morning stroll. The album ends with the sleepy and atmospheric “Wild Geese” with the bands synth tickling really taking shape. This might be their gloomiest album to date but it is certainly not void of bright spots. Between the melancholic vocals and abandoned house instrumentals, The Drums continue to build a sound all their own.
