The Wibbley Brothers Go Weird has acquired cult status since its release in 1982 with copies trading at over £100 on eBay, thanks to its mixture of humour, early electronica and sheer oddness. Now Trubshaw’s Astonishing Records is set to reissue the album as a limited edition vinyl LP, CD and download on Record Store Day, April 18th. “Although it’s very funny, this record defies classification,” said Trubshaw’s director and original co-producer Guy Jackson. “The songs cover an eclectic range of styles yet it still hangs together as a whole. If you were looking for a left-field missing link between the Bonzos and Half Man Half Biscuit, this could be it.” Originally released, and always out of place, on Midlands-based hardcore punk and metal label Rondelet, The Wibbley Brothers Go Weird has been remastered for this reissue but retains the original and eye-catching cover artwork which originally stopped record store browsers in their tracks.“ Despite rumours to the contrary,” explained Terry Wibbley, who with brother Ronnie comprises the group, “the cover photo does not show our younger selves. But we do know who these people are.” The album’s initial release was hampered by the imminent collapse of Rondolet and lack of any promotional support. A positive review appeared in Sounds however, describing Go Weird as: “a bounty of latterday Midlands Bonzoid low camp... without taste, waste or allusion to sanity.” Unscarred by the record’s lack of commercial success, The Wibbley Brothers have kept a low profile in the intervening 33 years since their LP debut. A clip of them performing More Haddock Oh More live in 2013 in near-complete darkness has appeared on YouTube while fans have created their own videos for songs such as Der Wawazawa and I Am The Pope. “We have been working on the follow-up album, provisionally entitled Mornin’ Jack, throughout this time,” explained Ronnie, “which we will release through Trubshaw’s later this year.
