Distinctly lyrical and blending the styles of jazz, blues, and folk, the time-honored debut includes enduring classics like "Ol'55" (covered by the Eagles), the heartwrenching "Martha" and the gentle acoustic folk of "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" on which Tom Waits sings "well, I hope that I don't fall in love with you / 'Cause falling in love just makes me blue." It's heartfelt but at the same time cynical, emotionally vibrant w/o being overly sentimental.
